January Astrocycles 2014

by Joan Kiley

Joan Kiley AstrologerJanuary 1, 2014 was the most important day of the month, perhaps the most important day of the year…for some of us! The New Moon in Capricorn’s stellium (Pluto and Mercury teamed up with the Sun and Moon) was a perfect opportunity to make resolutions you will keep. Nothing “pie in the sky.” This is Capricorn, my friend. That means feet on the ground, one foot in front of the other, ready to move forward in a practical manner with full intent to accomplish. These resolutions may take courage; they may take bravery. But we all need to resolve to make changes, no matter how big or how small, because for many people on the planet, there are rough times ahead in 2014.

Venus is retrograde right now, and Mars will retrograde on March 1. The Cardinal Grand Cross will be exact in a couple of months. With Mars and Jupiter in play with Uranus and Pluto, there is pressure building that could result in even more wild weather patterns, plus aggression and violence, between individuals or nations. The crumbling systems being pushed to the edge can evoke reactive desperate actions by people in positions of power. We have seen it already; we will see it again. With Chiron in aspect to Pluto we could see more suffering and wounding. There is much suffering now, but I do expect to see more in the months to come. For example, negative consequences of the Fukushima nuclear disaster that will no doubt continue to be revealed, despite government’s insistence that “everything’s fine. We’ve got it under control.”

That doesn’t mean it will be all gloom and doom. There will be innovative breakthroughs as well, as we have seen in the past and are experiencing presently. We have seen Native peoples take powerful leadership on the fossil fuel fight, we see grassroots economies developing that can benefit everyone and with less harm to the environment. One wildly encouraging victory to me was seeing the majority of Americans NOT wanting to have military strikes against Syria! When have we seen that happen in our lifetimes?

These positive signs must be celebrated and encouraged. As more and more individuals release what is old and no longer of use to them on their journey to evolve, and as they embrace what their hearts speak to them as truth, we will all benefit. People will find new support systems, in the form of groups and other individuals, as each person recognizes and begins to speak her/his truth. All of these actions require a stepping up and stepping out, slowly, and surely.

The following quote from David Whyte says it best for me: “To come to ground is to find a home in circumstances and to face the truth, no matter how difficult that truth may be; to come to ground is to begin the courageous conversation: to step into difficulty and by taking that first step, begin the movement through all difficulties to come, to find the support and foundation that has been beneath our feet all along; a place to step onto, a place on which to stand at last and a place from which to step.”

So as the year began, not only was there a stellium in Capricorn “from which to step,” but the Cardinal Grand Cross was functioning quite strongly, particularly the opposition between Mars at 11 degrees Libra and Uranus at 8 Aries. Jupiter in Cancer was at 16 degrees, retrograding toward its opposition with Pluto.

By January 5, the cardinal cross was joined by a water Grand Trine with the Moon in Pisces, Saturn in Scorpio, and Jupiter in Cancer. The trine became a kite as the Capricorn Sun and Mercury sextile both Saturn and Moon. This is complex energy, as the cardinal square action-orientation is somewhat mellowed by the watery trines and sextiles. Actions taken may be less reactionary and more motivated by deep feeling. The Pisces/Neptune and Jupiter/Cancer influences could mean more benefit for all.

On January 7, Venus and Mercury conjoin. Great day for a loving, or even difficult conversation, as the heart and mind will be connected. If you feel and think loving thoughts, you will communicate loving thoughts. On January 10, Venus conjoins the Sun, and the two sextile Saturn. These are excellent days, an excellent week really, for family discussions, talking to employers/employees, project or team meetings, and with the retrograde Venus—connecting with old friends from the past.

On January 11, Mercury enters Aquarius, while the Moon is in Gemini, bringing a bit more air into the picture, and lightening up the mood. On the 13th and 14th, Mercury will be square the Moon’s nodes, and we may find ourselves questioning our path. Just where am I headed? Based on past experience, is the path I seem to be on, really where I want to go?

On the 14th, the Moon joins Jupiter opposing Venus and Pluto and square Mars. More complex energy to accompany our probing of life’s journey, particularly where relationships are concerned. Am I truly being myself in relationship? Am I valuing myself; am I feeling valued by others in a way that is meaningful to me? Am I acting on an equal basis with others, experiencing real cooperation, to reap maximum benefit? And if not, what action do I need to take to encourage this to happen? Or not. Consider whether the action you need to take is more a change in attitude, such as not taking the behavior of others personally, realizing it is more about them, less about you. With both Venus and Jupiter retrograde, we need to consider being our own best friend.

The Moon in Cancer is looking for safety, security, and as she joins with Jupiter there could also be a feeling of optimism and new opportunity. As we question where we are and where we are going, and with whom we are doing it, a sense of newness and willingness to take chances could bring a lot of excitement to our new year. AND just in time for the Cancer Full Moon at 8:51 PM PST on January 15. There are no really close aspects to the Full Moon, though we’ll feel all of the tension and excitement of the many planets in Cardinal signs. Take a look where 25 degrees 58 minutes Cancer is in your own chart to see what house, and therefore, what area of your life might be most affected. From there, trust your intuition and take action if and where you feel directed.

The Sun will join Mercury in Aquarius at 8:00 PM PST on January 19, and increase our capacity for objectivity. This leaves only Venus and Pluto in Capricorn, getting closer and closer to each other and opposing Jupiter, aspects that continue through the end of the month. We may struggle with boundary issues, but when we ask for strength we find it.

Nature/Mother Earth is sending powerful messages this winter weatherwise, and we need to pay heed, respect who’s really in charge here. Humans have masterfully “screwed up” in terms of climate change, and now we reap what we have sown. Pluto in Capricorn opposed to Jupiter in Cancer. Capricorn the earth and Cancer the mother. Pluto, god of the underworld, versus Jupiter, god of the upper world. A power struggle that happens once every 12 years, and it’s happening now. We can only look at our own inner world/outer world lives, and find our own guidance, but each of us needs to do this. We each must find our own path to inspiration. It feels very synchronistic that as Jupiter in Cancer began this odyssey to oppose Pluto we had a new Pope encouraging the world to put its focus on caring and justice.

On January 22, Moon joins Mars in Libra, and trines Mercury. Can we get our heart and mind together on what it is we really desire? Moon/Mars form a T-square to the Venus/Pluto opposition to Jupiter. If we can get clarity on our own desires, we can take what action is most meaningful for us, and the most beneficial for the earth.

The final week of the month finds us with the opposition between Pluto/Venus and Jupiter exact, plus Mercury square to Saturn. Don’t let stubborn old ideas of yourself or others cloud your ability to restructure your thoughts and ideas for the future. You have far more capacity for change, deep change, than you may imagine.

January has a second New Moon on January 30, this time in the sign of Aquarius at 1:38 PM PST. This is the second New Moon after the winter solstice, thus it begins the Year of the Horse in the Chinese Zodiac. The Sun and Moon, both in Aquarius, are sextile ruling planet Uranus. New ideas and insights that come your way are gifts to welcome.

Venus stations direct on January 31. Relationship/financial trends could begin to alter now and/or move forward, however Venus remains in her shadow period until March 4, so the major change of direction may be more visible at that time.

At month’s end, Mercury is preparing for a retrograde period that will begin February 6.

Happy New Year!
