Take Advantage of Great Aspects for New Starts in May 2011

by Madeline Gerwick

Madeline Gerwick AstrologerFirst of all, what a week with the President announcing the death of Osama bin Laden on Sunday night May 1, right before Monday night’s New Moon! With that announcement occurring during the dark of the Moon, you can be sure there’s something hidden that we’re not being told. We’ll see what comes out later about this. Remember that secrets cannot be kept for long any more. It will come out.

Next, we have a particularly great set of cycles to plant new seeds for prosperity! This is a major conjunction between Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in the sign of Aries. These cycles are already in range. They peak on May 11th and stay in range through May 15th. This set of cycles is especially great for announcing new books, workshops, articles, conferences, seminars, or classes. It’s also terrific for introducing new products or services or starting new projects related to health care, legal matters, international issues, publishing, and education. In addition, it’s great for anything entrepreneurial or physical. So have at it! Take the time to plant some prosperity seeds now. Do whatever will bring you the most reward downstream.

The One and The Many: The Sagittarius Gemini Axis

by Austin Coppock

Austin Coppock Astrologer

Crabs, rams, half horse dudes and virgins- at first glance the Zodiac looks like a mess. A grab-bag of odd and outmoded symbols assigned arbitrarily to random places on a wheel. However, after a little study, what at first appeared to be a trash can for archaic symbols becomes a mandala of unparalleled symmetry, a lovingly crafted organizational system for thousands of years of insights.

Chess - The One and the ManyOne of the more interesting facets of the Zodiac’s architecture is the relationship between opposing Signs. The Zodiac contains 12 Signs, each arranged around a wheel. This gives us 6 pairs of signs staring across the circle, complementing and contradicting each other. Each of these is an axis, representing the polar extremes of approach to one of life’s big questions.

The Lunar Nodes have a special relationship to pairs of opposing Signs. The Nodes move clockwise and opposite each other, always transiting opposing Signs simultaneously. The Nodes visit each pair of Signs for about a year and a half before moving on. In March of 2011, the North Node entered Sagittarius, while the South Node slipped into Gemini, activating the axis. The Nodal dragon will be splayed across this pair well into 2012, pulling us into the issues that emerge amidst this polarity, and challenging us to engage in the underlying alchemy of the present.

Planting Seeds with the New Moon in Taurus May 2011

by Dena DeCastro

We begin a new month, a new phase of the pagan wheel of the year, and a new lunar cycle all within a 48 hour period at the beginning of this May 2011. May 1st, also celebrated as the pagan holiday Beltane, falls just a day before the New Moon in Taurus. Since today was the nicest weather day for several weeks now here in Portland, I found myself wanting to get out there and stick my hands in the dirt and do some meditation-as-gardening along the way.

My own natal Moon in Taurus felt completely at home and at peace, playing in the mud. But it was not just about playing. I found that I was able to use my gardening today to invoke the themes at play in all three cycles – Beltane, New Moon, and new month. With conscious awareness, I used each step of the process as symbolic of the inner work. This is the everyday magic that can happen when we are aware of our center within the cycles at play (lunar, astrological, and seasonal) in any given moment. We can turn a simple activity like gardening into a ritual by infusing it with purpose and intent.

Step 1: Uprooting

First, I had to uproot some old dried up shrubs that had been making my front garden look ugly for a while. That was the hardest part to do, both physically AND metaphorically. This was so difficult that I actually had to ask for help, reminding myself that we all need help sometimes.

Mercury Direct and the Latest News On Comet Elenin

by Madeline Gerwick

Madeline Gerwick AstrologerApril 23rd is the last day of Mercury retrograde! Yes, I can hear great sighs of relief out there! We had a very tough retrograde period this time, with plenty of frustration, anger, aggravation, irritation and delays. You may even have encountered plenty of sharp criticisms and/or rigid thinking. That’s related to Mercury conjunct Mars and both of them opposite Saturn. This is starting to lessen now, but you can expect these challenges to continue somewhat through the rest of the month. A better use of those energies would be to direct them towards planning and logistical work. The lesson now is to get the details right and that will make a big difference.

When Mercury is stopping to turn around and go direct, notice that it’s not moving at all. For Mercury, this is the hardest situation and it requires plenty of patience. Things will still be slow over the ten days "shadow period" as Mercury moves direct, but problems will be getting fixed. So just take a deep breath or two. We’ll all get into new territory finally on May 11th after Mercury gets past the area it’s been retracing. Until then, be patient.

Neptune in Pisces April 2011

by Dena DeCastro

At the edges of the solar system, the slow-moving blue planet Neptune takes about 15 years to move through one sign. So its entry into a new sign on Monday, April 4th is a noteworthy astrological event, much as Uranus’ shift into Aries was last month. But Neptune is not just moving into any new sign – it is moving into its own sign, Pisces. Neptune’s last entry into Pisces was in 1848, shortly after its discovery in 1846.

The current transit of Neptune in Pisces is just a “preview tour” in 2011, as it will move back into Aquarius on August 4th, before finally settling fully into Pisces on February 3, 2012, where it will stay until 2026.

In our natal charts, Neptune represents our Inner Mystic – the part of us that can move beyond our ego-identification and our focus on mundane, earthly things. If we use our Neptune in its highest potential, we are able to access the transcendent, the mystical, or what some may call the divine. This might include our more traditional spiritual practices, but Neptune isn't just for buddhist monks. Neptune can also take us into deeper experiences of music, film, or nature. How many times have you found yourself lost in a wonderful dream-like state while listening to a piece of music or watching a film that you love?

Mars Conjunct Uranus and Mercury Retrograde

by Madeline Gerwick

Madeline Gerwick Astrologer The Universe has quite a sense of humor! Today is April Fools Day and it’s an all day Time-Out with Mercury retrograde! Time-Out is the phrase I use in my Good Timing Guide to denote days in which it's better to not take certain types of actions. So today it's not only possible that little will come of whatever important tasks you’re trying to do today, but you’re also likely to experience a lot of delays while you’re madly working to accomplish nothing! So my advice is this: take a break and clean up your office or home. Get organized instead.
Later today Mars enters the sign of Aries. Mars is in charge of this sign, so he’s right at home there. Mars represents warrior energy. He also represents our motivations and the physical actions we take to express them. In Aries, Mars is quick to take action, spontaneous and impulsive. But there's more. As soon as Mars arrives in Aries he’s quickly going to meet up with the planet Uranus, which is quite a disruptive change-maker. Together these energies are highly volatile and can be explosive. Tomorrow April 2, the Moon joins this gathering and lights a match. So be careful out there! Don’t drive if you’re angry and avoid the risk of causing an accident. We’re also at the start of the cycle of Mercury retrograde, and these two cycles combined are associated with road rage and accidents. So stay extra alert while you’re driving.

Can We Predict Earthquakes with Astrology?

by Judith Hill

Judith Hill astrologerIs it possible that earthquakes can be triggered by planetary placements or configuration?

This age old question was explored in a pioneering research project in the late 1980s by researchers Judith Hill and Mark Polit. Previous researchers had struggled to find that "one" cosmic condition that might trigger all great quakes. Uranus was a favorite research planet in those days, probably due to its reputation for sudden, unexpected change!

Hill and Polit discovered that geographic regions are as unique as people. They designed their experiments around seismic regions where the largest quakes could be linked within two hundred miles.

Their complete world  sample of regionally grouped 20th century "Great Earthquakes" allowed them to compare the planetary patterns by region.

The Super Moon Hype

Dispelling the SuperMoon Hysteria

As you may have heard, the upcoming “SuperMoon” (aka the Full Moon of March 19th in Virgo) has been enjoying quite a bit of notoriety over the past week or so on the internet. Unfortunately, once again astrologers are getting a bad rap for allegedly being the purveyors of inaccurate information. So, as an astrologer, I’d like to dispel some of the hype that’s come up around this term.

The upcoming Full Moon on March 19th is not so terribly different from other Full Moons. SuperMoons actually occur frequently, although they may vary in their distance from the earth. The March 19th Full Moon is not the closest that the Moon will ever be or has ever been to the earth. However, it may be slightly closer than other SuperMoons over the past several years, and is the closest it will be until 2016.

Get Ready to Rumble with Uranus in Aries

Get Ready to Rumble with Uranus in Aries

by Madeline Gerwick

Madeline Gerwick Astrologer

First of all, it's hard not to notice the Farewell to Pisces that Uranus gave us yesterday and today. When planets are at the beginning or the end of a sign, they're exceptionally strong. Pisces represents the oceans and Uranus represents a change-maker or a disrupter. Uranus' last full day in Pisces was yesterday. So the earthquake and tsunami in Japan March 10, 2011 are a a little " Forget-Me-Not to Pisces!

Today on March 11th we have a MAJOR planetary shift as Uranus moves into the sign of Aries and the revolution resumes in full swing! The last time we had Uranus in Aries was between January 1928 and March 1935. Notice that we were having very challenging economic times back then as well. Plus last summer Uranus tiptoed into Aries from late May through mid-August. So we had a little preview last summer. This time Uranus will stay in Aries for most of the next 8 years, so this influence will be with us until early 2019.
